1. "FARMERS vs GOVERNMENT RESPONSIBLE Mr. Josep Maria Pelegrí, Conseller d'Agricultura, Ramaderia, Pesca, Alimentació i Medi Natural de la Generalitat de Catalunya".

 A TV ROUND TABLE

Presenter (Francesc): Good evening! Today we have the  Minister of Agriculture of Catalonia in our program who has come here  to listen to a group of farmers who want to discuss with him their point of view about GMOs.

Welcome everybody! Thank you for coming today. Now we can start.

Good evening! They are The Farmers Union from Catalonia and they want to tell you the farmers’ point of view about GMOs.

Elisabet: I’m from a 4th generation of farmers and I think that GM crops are a way to keep farmers on their land in Europe. If we don’t have more GM crops, we will become less competitive and have to import more food as well as use less sustainable farming practices.

Maria: I’m a cotton farmer and my opinion is that as more and more modern technology products are used by farmers and our income increased quite a lot, in my community, farmers do not lack food and clothes anymore. You cannot find a child who cannot afford their education anymore.

Andrea: I’m David, an old farmer, and I think there is a big future with GM crops, but if we don’t get a move on, Europe risks denying European farmers access to the biggest environmental advance that we have seen in the last 20-30 years, and at a time when we really need it. I for one would like to grow GM crops again given the opportunity.

Berta: We experienced a parasite problem in 1987-1988. This was the year when people treated their crops with pesticides up to 18 times. And since that year, when you grow cotton, you put it in the ground and you are worried. You couldn’t even sleep when you plant cotton because you don’t know if you can cope with the parasites. But with GMOs, when you plant, now you can sleep.

Albert: Biotechnology has delivered increased productivity, reduced costs and better soil management. GM seeds make soil management easier, they work well with the direct seeding technique and help to better control pests compared to conventional varieties.

Minister Mayber: Well, we’ll try to take into consideration all your suggestions and opinions to do something about it. When I talk to the other members of the Parliament, perhaps we can arrive to a decision and consider the GMO crops in our country.

Francesc:  Okay, that was all for today! Thank you again to all of you for coming. I hope the final desicion will be benefitial for everybody.
And you! See you in the next programme! Byyyyyyyye!

2.   IS "MONSANTO "THE MOST EVIL COMPANY IN THE WORLD?

Presenter: Hernestina, A: Paula D, B: Òscar, C: Cristina, D: Karine, E: Jin, F: Cristian, G: Inés,

Hernestina: Today, in this round table, we are going to discuss about Monsanto. Do you think "Monsanto" is the most evil company in the world?

Paula D: Yes, Monanto is evil because they make GMOs. They cause disease, allergies, and harm reproductive fertility in humans. The old saying "you are what you eat" is definitely true, and eating genetically modified food is mutating and killing humans.

Òscar: With a planet of 6 Billion people....It would be difficult if not impossible to feed the masses at affordable prices without disease resistant crops and insecticides.

Paula D: Yes, truly evil. Monsanto is trying to take control of the agricultural process across the entire world. They are producing seeds that they can acquire patents on that prevent farmers from using a part of their crop to use for seed for the next year, something that farmers have done throughout history.

Cristina: Monsanto now has patent rights on their seeds, and so once a farmer buys and uses Monsanto seeds he can no longer use seeds from his own crop in the next year.

Karine: Farmers who don't use Monsanto seeds can still get into legal battles with Monsanto over using seeds from their own crops that have cross pollinated with Monsanto crops.

Jin: Monsanto is destroying small farmers across the world in the interest of their corporate profits.

Cristian: They do all their best to destroy traditional agriculture in any country they can reach and make farmers dependent on their seeds, Monsanto's seeds, because the plants grown from these are sterile, especially for that purpose. The peasants have to buy the seeds every year.

Òscar: If Monsanto haven't improved agriculture by introducing genetically modified foods and other products, pollution and global warming would have drastically affected agriculture and the world would be passing through a horrible famine now.

Inés: Yes …They have kept the cost of crops like corn low by developing ways to produce more crop yields than ever.

Jin: The more productive the farmers are, the more genetically engineered crop seeds the world has, and the more money Monsanto can make.

Inés: Is Monsanto helping people or getting people's money?

Hernestina: Well, this is the question. Are they really helping to feed people around the world?
